We work to rebuild Britain’s hard power, support NATO, and revive the industrial base that is our bulwark against rising adversaries.

Britain is increasingly undefended. In this dangerous age, our armed forces are acutely neglected, putting our home and allies at risk. More than at any time since the 1930s, our lack of preparedness is putting the survival of our country at risk. We work across Atlanticist defence planning to change this.

Rebuilding British hard power as a credible Atlantic partner.

Defence planning requires clear increases in the strength of our forces, especially Royal Navy renewal, with measurable increases in fleet strength. This work includes working with US scholars on British and Atlantic defence policy.

Understanding the challenge of EU defence structures.

878 will study the process of EU defence harmonisation and its relationship with NATO, British policy, and transatlantic security

Shutting down British contributions to adversary military power.

Building on the success of previous work by 878 researchers, we will continue to expose and dismantle the channels through which UK research capacity has been exploited by authoritarian adversaries.

Warfighting and the industrial base.

Rejuvenating Britain’s defence-industrial base is a priority. The Government has underfunded defence, leaving multi-billion blackholes for future Governments to fund. By investing into the UK’s manufacturing heartlands while buying abroad when needed, combined with a serious energy strategy, we can stimulate regional economic growth whilst boosting our nation’s defences and security.

Planned legislative and regulatory outcomes include:

  • Production for strategic-military needs including steel, the drone industry, and cyber.
  • Free-market incentives such as tax-breaks for investment.
